The integral component of eXpurgate virus protection is the multiple-award-winning, signature-based anti-virus software AntiVir made by Eleven’s technology partner, Avira, the only German provider for all-in-one anti-virus solutions. The Avira security suite, its core virus protection element, was recently chosen as “Software of the Year” 2010.

Signature-based virus scanners identify known malware saved on the database. When a virus or worm is identified, it is assigned a signature that gets saved on that database. If the virus then reappears, it can be identified as such using the signature and assigned to a specific virus.

Eleven categorizes messages that contain viruses, worms, or Trojans identified by AntiVir as dangerous.virus and assigns them a malware name (provided by Avira). Eleven Managed E-Mail Security customers can choose how to handle messages that contain a virus under the "E-Mail Actions” menu item.
