Press release:
Survey: Company spam loads on the increase
When it comes to e-mail security, German companies are increasingly relying on managed services – Nearly 50 percent of companies have already lost important e-mail due to spam
Berlin, April 7, 2010 - The spam load at German companies is on the increase. This was the verdict of a survey of more than 500 IT managers at German companies carried out during CeBIT by eleven, the leading German e-mail security specialist. 63.6 percent of the respondents stated that their spam volumes have clearly increased in the last twelve months. In contrast, only 44.2 percent of those surveyed a year ago noted such a surge in spam mail. A mere 6.7 percent of respondents reported declines in spam volumes (2009: 15.7 percent).
In battling spam, the trend is clearly moving in the direction of outsourcing. Whereas only a third of respondents (35.1 percent) in 2009 said they had outsourced their anti-spam measures through managed services or planned to do so within the next 12 months, more than half (53.3 percent) of those surveyed in 2010 are taking this approach. In choosing the right solution, two things are critical: the spam detection rate and above all the false positive rate (31 percent). Yet economy and cost-effectiveness are also playing a more important role: 23.8 percent named a reduction in maintenance effort and 23.4 percent the conservation of their own IT resources as central decision-making criteria.Other results of the survey:
-
46.5 percent of respondents have already lost at least one business-relevant e-mail message, for example through the incorrect operation of a spam filter (2009: 40.1 percent).
-
Those surveyed see the greatest danger of spam in the decline in employee productivity (40.5), and 42.3 percent see their IT security threatened.
-
34.6 percent fear the loss of important e-mail messages as a result of spam.
