New spam trend: Online forums and banned books
Canadian Pharmacy campaign uses Yahoo! Groups as target website – Random text with passages from Hitler’s „Mein Kampf“
Berlin, 09.08.2010 – The eleven team warns of a new spam campaign originating from the well-known „Canadian Pharmacy“ spam gang. The campaign uses a combination of ploys aimed at circumventing traditional spam filters. The e-mail contains a link which does not direct the recipient to the target site but to an online forum on the popular Yahoo! Groups platform. This forum contains an ad, advertising Viagra, which links to the Canadian Pharmacy site. The purpose is to circumvent spam filters which search the e-mail content for addresses of known spam sites. Platforms such as Yahoo! Groups are classified as legitimate sites by such filters and therefore usually undetected.
The second ploy the spam campaign uses is to add random text in order to confuse content-based filters. The new twist to this well-known method is to use passages from Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” which is banned in many countries.
