Press release:

eleven: there’s a phishing attack every twenty seconds

PayPal users are preferred targets of online fraud attempts

Berlin, July 27, 2010 – Approximately every 20 seconds, German e-mail recipients are victims of a phishing attack.  This figure was calculated by the eleven research team’s e-mail security experts on the basis of the e-mail volume checked in June, 2010 by the eXpurgate Managed Service.  Favorite targets of phishers include online payment services, followed by social network user accounts.

In particular, customers of the widely-used payment service PayPal were subject to massive phishing attacks in June of 2010: 96.1 percent of the phishing e-mail that eleven identified was aimed at PayPal. Among the subject lines were, for example, “Important: *** For the security of your account we require a profile update ***“ or “NOTICE: *** For the security of your account we require a profile update *** Attached to the message was a form in HTML format in which recipients were asked to enter their personal information, including their PayPal and credit card passwords. This approach was intended to mislead recipients into communicating their user data.

The integrated e-mail security solution eXpurgate from eleven identifies phishing e-mail just as reliably as spam (recognition rate: over 99 percent). eXpurgate enables companies to deflect phishing e-mail before it even reaches their own e-mail infrastructures. Private users can also protect themselves from phishing attacks with the free spam service spamfence (www.spamfence.net).
