Press release:

eleven introduces Spam Calendar

Online calendar lists events with heightened spam threats – 2009 sees continued trend in event-related spam

Berlin, 02 December 2009 - eleven, the leading German e-mail security provider, introduced its Spam Calendar today.  E-mail users can visit www.spam-calendar.com to discover which events have either generated waves of spam in past years or are likely to unleash spam campaigns in the future.  The Spam Calendar is intended for both private and business e-mail users and includes holidays, sporting events, and political functions – and warns e-mail users of events likely to generate suspicious e-mails.  The calendar also catalogues the most important causes for spam in the last months.  Entries are founded on analyses carried out by the eleven Research Team, following the development of spam over the years.

The Spam Calendar is reflective of a trend that demonstrated continued growth in 2009: the creators of spam and malware e-mails are increasingly turning to popular events and occasions as the basis for deceitful e-mails.  For example, in 2009, massive spam waves followed Michael Jackson’s death or the release of the "Harry Potter" and "Twilight" films, in addition to the increasingly typical surges occurring around popular holidays like Valentine’s Day and Halloween, and in the weeks preceding Christmas.  The eleven Spam Calendar therefore warns users about dates that are likely to be used as a pretext for large-scale waves of spam or malware.

“Spam is becoming an increasingly seasonal business that takes advantage of many people’s interest in political, cultural, and sporting events, as well as special occasions like holidays.  The eleven Spam Calendar is meant to raise e-mail users’ awareness of the dangers and growing prevalence of event spam,” states Robert Rothe, the founder and managing director of eleven.
